Criminal Trial for Desdunes Death Begins

Monday is the start of the criminal trial connected to the death of George Desdunes, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Cornell University. Three men (SAE pledges at the times) and the SAE chapter are charged with “hazing and unlawful dealing with a child in the first-degree.” The chapter is additionally charged with “second-degree criminal nuisance.”

As the chapter no longer exists at Cornell, it will be interesting to watch how those charges will be addressed. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the charges against the chapter dismissed fairly quickly. If that happens, it would seem likely  that these individuals would negotiate plea bargains and avoid the trial. I would be very surprised if this case made it to the jury.

The Ithaca Journal, and The Cornell Daily Sun are likely to have the best coverage of the trial.

The family of George Desdunes has also filed a civil lawsuit against a wide-reaching number of individuals and organizations.
