In the past week there have been a couple of situations that have brought back connections to the movie Dazed and Confused (1993). For those who don’t remember the movie, it is set on the last day of school in 1976, and involved the hazing rituals of the rising Senior class on the rising freshmen (eighth graders at the time). It is worth watching for highly memorable performances by very young Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey.
This weekend three Juniors from Rye, NY were arrested for kidnapping and hazing (paddles) several eighth grade students. “Authorities say the hazing was part of a ritual involving Rye High School juniors and eighth-graders who will become freshman at the school in the fall.” A local Rye newsblog has some additional info.
On the other end of the country, officials at Malibu, CA schools sent out a letter to parents warning of similar hazing activities. The examples cited seem to come directly from Dazed and Confused. After this story spread widely, the school officials were confused as to why this got so much attention. They indicate that they have been sending a similar letter for the past seven years.
With all of the hazing issues over the past year, it is actually easy to see how any hazing activity, large or small, will get attention by the main stream media. I think this is a positive step in solving these problems.
