The Daily Nebraskan reports that the Alpha Nu chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc. (Nebraska-Lincoln) has been suspended for one year based on accusations of hazing by its national organization.
What makes this story particularly interesting is how the headquarters staff became aware of these issues. They simply contacted two young women who had “discontinuations” with the chapter. That is, these women left the organization sometime after their application for membership, and were not initiated. When contacted, the women described behavior that was demeaning and frankly, silly. For example, “the members were prohibited from using elevators or taking shortcuts. They weren’t allowed to touch pink and purple, the sorority’s colors. And […] the sorority members were required to carry an egg at all times and bring a live fish to meetings.”
The simple act of following up with those who do not complete a new member program to initiation is something that needs to be done more often. It is on my list to track this information this fall.
