San Francisco State/Lambda Phi Epsilon – Golden Gate Xpress has posted a story on the death of freshman Peter Tran, who died while attending a fraternity party on April 24th. The article has very few details, and I have not been able to find any other articles mentioning this death. “The fraternity was placed under immediate suspension pending investigation,” by the University.
- Update (May 13) – SFBay.ca has a story with some additional information. It primarily focuses on past issues within Lambda Phi Epsilon at other campuses.
Willamette/Sigma Chi – (Statesman Journal) The posting of several private facebook posts to a public blog has created an uproar at Willamette University. The postings to a private page for the Sigma Chi chapter were described by students as “sexist and vulgar.” The posts were copied to a WordPress blog called “Willamette Truth.” The University suspended the Sigma Chi chapter pending an investigation, and the chapter has voted to remove 12 men from its membership. The national fraternity is also investigating.
SUNY-Plattsburgh/Alpha Chi Rho – A University spokesman has announced that charges have been filed against the Alpha Chi Rho chapter for “yelling derogatory names to people as they marched in the “Take Back the Night” parade last month” (Fox44 News). An article in Cardinal Points Online describes the incident as: “‘We just turn the corner here when the window opened and we heard a group of male voices chanting ‘slut, slut, slut,’ and someone started yelling ‘shut up sluts,’” said Gender and Women’s Studies Department Chair Simona Sharoni, who attended the march.”
