A couple weeks ago we linked to an article from the Chico Enterprise Record about recent suspensions of two fraternities and one sorority at Chico State. Today, one of those fraternities, Sigma Chi, has announced that they are going to continue to operate without any official connection to the University. In a press release from the fraternity’s headquarters, they stated that they “will operate its Kappa Theta chapter independently from the university for the foreseeable future.” The University’s suspension came from finding someone home-brewing beer in the chapter house, in violation of a decree to ban all alcohol from fraternities. (Update: Link to most recent ChicoER article.)
The full press release can be found at KHSLTV.com‘s website.
This step by Sigma Chi has the potential to set a precedent for other chapters on campus. That would not be a good thing, and would set back the efforts to address what appears to be a serious alcohol problem in the community.
Update (May 17) – An interesting staff editorial from the Chico Enterprise Record. “Our view: Thank goodness an organization as insolent as Sigma Chi is no longer part of Chico State.”
